Teaching Acts of Kindness
Lockers
Scientific studies prove there are many physical, emotional, and mental health benefits associated with kindness. Seventh grade students in Ms. Tallarico’s and Mrs. Conrad’s language art classes are doing their part to promote random acts of kindness.

Recently, the students read the teleplay Brian's Song and were asked to complete an act of kindness within the school or community that demonstrated topics such as caring, friendship, or sportsmanship. Students then analyze how their topic connected to the theme of Brian’s Song.

One project inspired by this lesson included cutting out over 700 circles that included hand-written inspirational words on each one and attaching them to every locker in the middle school. Most of inspirational circles are still on the lockers today!

Other acts of kindness inspired from this lesson includes the following:

WIthin the school:
  • Helping out our custodians and teachers.
  • Painting inspirational sayings on purple and gold rocks and placing them around our school buildings.
  • Giving musical notes of encouragement to band members before a contest.

Within the community:
  • Purchasing and donating items to the Carroll Blessing Box.
  • Bringing notes of appreciation and baked goods to local police departments, fire houses, and hospitals.
  • Volunteering at local animal shelters.
  • Donating items to Goodwill and the Ronald McDonald House, and serving food at local homeless shelters.
  • Planting trees and picking up trash around local neighborhoods and parks
  • Sending Christmas packages to kids in need.
  • Visiting nursing homes (hosting a BINGO night, participating in Halloween festivities, and visiting with the residents).
  • Reading to children at an Autism School.

Great job by all students and teachers involved!
