A Message from the Superintendent

Superintendent

The beginning of the school year is an exciting time for all of us and it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year! It is a time to build special memories, exchange new ideas, see new faces, and access new opportunities. Our staff is eager to teach and inspire every student – from our little ones attending their first day of school as a Bulldog, to our seniors beginning their last first day of school as a Bulldog – each student will be provided with experiences, opportunities, and support to reach their fullest potential.

The Bloom-Carroll Local School District is among the finest in the entire state. Our students, our families, our staff, our community, our traditions, and our future are exactly the foundations that make our school district so unique. As I begin a new role as the superintendent, I want to take the opportunity to share with you what an honor it is to serve the BCLSD – the district my family chooses to live in and to educate our three daughters.

As we embark on this long journey together, you need to know that I will work tirelessly with all stakeholders to honor our historically rich past, preserve the quality of our schools, and prepare our students to lead and be successful in the future. We must strive to enhance 21st century educational opportunities, provide safe and appropriate facilities for every child, and keep the district fiscally sound. We value and offer award-winning extra-curricular and co-curricular programs that focus on the arts, academics, and athletics. Developing a well-rounded student is essential in the overall academic and social development of each child. We will continue to offer and explore ways to enhance advanced course offerings, integrate technology, and provide intervention supports to better meet the needs of each individual learner.

Great progress has been made in the BCLSD and we look forward to further improvements. Education is rapidly changing and preparing our students for success in the rapidly changing world is essential. We have continued to conduct reviews and revisions to our curriculum resources and new English-Language Arts resources will be rolled out this year; Math, Science, and Social Studies materials have been adopted the past few years. Utilizing blended-learning resources with effective teaching practices that foster creativity, critical-thinking, collaboration, and communication will help to prepare our students for the rapidly changing future. The further implementation of our learning management system, Schoology, in grades 5-12 will allow users to create, manage, and share content and resources. All families are encouraged to stay up to date with their child’s grades and attendance by accessing our online gradebook, ProgressBook. We will be improving our teachers’ access to student data, using DataMap, to assist in making instructional decisions to improve student achievement. Important school forms will continue to be submitted by accessing Final Forms in the effort to improve our operations and efficiency for our district and our families. Links to these and additional resources can be found on our updated website. Visit the Parent Resources and Student Resources sections under Bulldog Portal.

As we continue to look forward at the future of our district, we must address the conditions of our current facilities. Our facilities are impacting the learning environment and limiting opportunities of our children. The elementary school buildings, modular classrooms, and high school building conditions need to be addressed soon in a fiscally responsible manner.

Certainly, there will be challenges ahead. However, continuing to further develop our strong relationships based on communication, mutual-respect, trust, and the welcoming of diverse opinions will help us overcome our challenges. We have important work that needs to be done, and all of us play an important role. It really does take a community to support our schools, and I cannot think of a better community to live in and work for than the Bloom-Carroll Local School District. As the educational leader of this district, I am committed to working with you to ensure we honor our past while also preparing our students for their future.

It is clearly an exciting time to be a Bulldog and I am excited to get to work!

Go Bulldogs!

Shawn Haughn, Superintendent
